Vintage Swedish herders horn (lur) or trumpet in good condition, a small amount of missing bark on the bell and a small amount of loose bark on the tip. Hand made in the traditional way from light birch wood and birch bark. 23 3/4" long.
Lur's were used by farmers, shepherd's, milk maids and sometimes the military. It has a decorative tie near the mouthpiece. There are two initials written in ink on the bell. I do know if the initials stand for the maker, owner or town. Please Google Swedish Lur if you are not familiar with these. I purchased this one from an antique shop in Stockholm in the 90s.
These ancient birch trumpets were used to signal danger, pass on messages, call people and express emotion. I used to wake my kids for school with it when they would not get up. Yes, it does make good sound!
