The Sinclair-Babe Ruth baseball contest was a 1930s promotion run by the Sinclair Refining Company, which awarded prizes to winners of an essay competition. The contest was promoted on a radio program featuring Babe Ruth.
Prizes:
1935 contest: 500 autographed baseballs, 25 RCA Victor radios, and 3 Nash automobiles.
1937 contest: Autographed baseballs.
The baseballs:
Autograph: While advertised as "signed" by Babe Ruth, the baseballs were signed by a secretary and are not true Babe Ruth autographs.
Markings: The Official National League (Ford Frick) baseballs were stamped with "Sinclair Babe Ruth Baseball Contest" on the sweet spot and had a facsimile Ruth signature on one of the side panels.
Memorabilia:
These baseballs and other items, such as radio scripts and advertising posters from the contest, are now collectible items.
