In Japan, Foo Dogs are known as "Komainu" and are also used to protect against evil spirits. They are often found in pairs, one with its mouth open and the other with its mouth closed. The open mouth represents the sound "a" and the closed mouth represents the sound "um", together they represent the sound of the universe, symbolizing the beginning and end of all things. The pair also represents yin and yang, the asian religious belief of the balance of the universe.
