This is a marcasite spider pendant, crafted from sterling silver. The "marcasite" stones are actually small, faceted pieces of pyrite, also known as "fool's gold," set into the metal to provide a dark, metallic sparkle. The actual mineral marcasite is too brittle for use in jewelry making. The pendant is made of .925 sterling silver but is not stamped and features numerous small, rose-cut pyrite (marcasite) stones.Marcasite jewelry gained immense popularity during the Victorian era and the Art Deco period as a sophisticated and affordable alternative to diamonds. This style often gives pieces a distinct vintage or antique feel. Spider motifs were common in Victorian-era jewelry, sometimes symbolizing good luck or wealth. It is in excellent vintage condition.
