c 1631 Map of the Americas AMERICA NOVITER DELINEATA Henrico Hondio

Description on Back of Map: “AMERICA The portolano, or the sailor's chart, dates back to the year 1300. These were drawn on sheepskin and showed the outline of coasts, harbors and shipping ports. The Romans used maps to aid them in their military campaigns and in the taxing of land. There were no professional map makers in early America, but skilled amateurs made many of them. All of the ancient maps are illustrated which adds to their decorative quality. Antiquity Collection.”

This very uncommon and extremely detailed map depicts the Americas in a highly decorative manner.  Based on the 1618 map by Jodicus Hondius, Jr.

California is shown as a peninsula. The northwest coast is shown oriented westward to Cape Mendocino, and then veering northeast - suggesting a Northwest Passage.
