This is a Dietz No. 2 D-Lite kerosene lantern. It is a vintage or antique tubular lantern designed for utility and is currently in a very rustic, rusted condition. R. E. Dietz Manufacturing Company, a premier maker of lanterns. This is a "cold-blast" design lantern. The design draws in cold air from around the top of the globe and feeds it through metal tubes to the flame, producing a brighter light than earlier "hot-blast" models.
It uses kerosene as fuel. Kerosene became a popular and safe illuminant in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The lantern features a large fuel fount (base) and metal air tubes that run vertically along the sides of the globe. It uses a short globe which is held in place by "LOC-NOB" ears, a feature specific to Dietz lanterns. The No. 2 D-Lite model was introduced circa 1919, combining features of earlier models into a more affordable design. The lantern shows significant age and surface rust, which is common for vintage, used items of this nature.
