The North Carolina state quarter is a circulating commemorative coin
issued by the United States Mint in 2001 as part of the 50 State
Quarters Program. The design features the Wright Brothers' historic
first flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on December 17, 1903. The
image shows the Wright Flyer, with the inscription "First Flight" and
"December 17, 1903." The state's name, "North Carolina," and the date of
statehood, "1789," are also included on the reverse of the coin.
The
obverse of the coin features the familiar image of George Washington,
the first President of the United States, along with the inscriptions
"United States of America," "Quarter Dollar," and "E Pluribus Unum."

50 State Quarters Program was a ten-year initiative by the U.S. Mint to
issue a quarter representing each of the 50 states in the order in
