The New Jersey state quarter, released by the US Mint in 1999, features a
rendition of General George Washington leading his troops across the
Delaware River during the Revolutionary War. The quarter also displays
the state's nickname, "The Garden State," as well as the year of minting
and the motto "E Pluribus Unum." The design was chosen by the state's
governor and a group of citizens, and was created by Alfred Maletsky, a
sculptor and coin designer from New Jersey.
