[Michiko Hirayama]
Michiko Hirayama (1926-?) was the wife of Ikuo Hirayama and for many years, she devotedly supported her husband and traveled with him on the Silk Road. In 1947, she entered the Tokyo University of the Arts (formerly Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music), and deepened her study of Japanese painting with her classmate Ikuo Hirayama. After graduating from the university, she became an assistant at Tokyo University of the Arts. In 1955, she put down her brush when she married Ikuo Hirayama and turned to supporting her husband. This clarified Hirayama's subject matter, and he made great strides as a painter, publishing numerous works related to the Silk Road. Behind Hirayama's success as a painter, the presence of his wife was indispensable. In particular, much of the preparation and documentation for the Silk Road was done by Michiko, and she also created art alongside this, engaging in diverse artistic activities such as Japanese painting and printmaking.
