Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun (1755-1842) is considered one of the finest 18th-century French painters and among the most important of all women artists. Her choice of attire for this portrait differentiates this work from her other self portraits. She is wearing a one-shouldered dress resembling the ancient Greek chiton.
