Quartz is a hard, crystalline mineral composed of silica, similar to glass.
The stone is formed when liquid Quartz and Tourmaline combine at high temperatures and pressure. The two minerals separate once more as temperatures and pressure drop. This process leaves Tourmaline needles trapped inside the Quartz crystal.
Tourmalinated Quartz is clear rock crystal (crystal quartz) which has grown together with black tourmaline, and shows strands of the tourmaline running through the quartz, hence "tourmalinated." The earliest use of tourmalinated quartz was for tools made by hominds in Ethiopia over 2 million years ago.
