Up for sale is a Vintage Japanese Wall Panel with Hand Carved Okame & Hyottoko Wooden Masks. The fan shaped wooden panel measures 27" wide and 17" in height. The masks are both about 8" tall and 6" wide. Superior Japanese craftmanship in these wood carvings! Solid hard wood.
Okame represents a lovely, always smiling Japanese woman who brings happiness and good fortune to any man she marries. She is a lucky symbol for long life, and also known as the Goddess of Mirth.
Hyottoko is the god of fire. Hyottoko brings good luck. The mask features dengaku (the Japanese traditional dance), where it plays as a clown-like figure. Hyottoko dance is believed to originate from the Edo period and has been passed down for generations to come since then!
In Japanese folklore, Okame and Hyottoko are often depicted as a married couple and are considered to symbolize a happy and blissful marriage.
