Gombrowicz's first novel, originally published in Polish in 1937. Long considered a masterpiece of social criticism as well as a vanguard work of literary experimentation, the book's notoriety gained Gombrowicz instant acclaim in literary circles, but made him enemies in his home country, from which he remained voluntarily exiled for the last thirty years of his life. This remained the standard English translation until Danuta Borchardt's 2000 transation directly from the Polish.
