Collection of 3 wood netsuke.
1. Hotei Buddha in Bag, 17-18 century, unsigned. It includes an attached cord, suggesting its continued usability as a functional netsuke.
HOTEI, one of the Seven “Gods of Iuck”and probably the most popular. Joyously laughing in the bag (Ho-tei), from which he derives his name, and in which he stows away the Precious Things, either to sleep or gaze on his surroundings.

2. Shishi (Guardian Lion / Foo Dog), late 19 C, signed 玉石 Gyokuseki.
A lively and powerful depiction of a shishi, or guardian lion, with an expressive face and flowing mane. The shishi is a traditional symbol of protection in East Asian art, often placed at entrances to ward off evil spirits. This netsuke captures the lion mid-roar, brimming with vitality.

3. Snake Coiled on a Bag. Signed 石川 Ishikawa.
A dramatic netsuke featuring a serpent with inlaid eyes coiled atop a bag. Expertly carved from dark hardwood, this piece evokes themes of mortality and wisdom.ju
