The first American tintypes were patented by Peter Neff, Jr. in Feb., 1856. He called it a Melainotype. They were on a heavier, thicker metal than the later tintypes, and of a finer quality. A rival of Neff's, Victor Griswold, patented a similar process in Oct., 1856, which he called a Ferrotype. Although Neff's patent predated Griswold's, the name Ferrotype won out in popular usage, before they were generally called "tintypes"
