This is a vintage Penca de Balangandãa traditional Brazilian charm cluster worn historically by Bahian women of African descent in the 18th and 19th centuries. These were worn at the waist or hip, often pinned to clothing or belts, and were believed to bring protection, prosperity, and good fortune. Each charm has meaning: fruits, seeds, shells, and symbols tied to nature, ancestry, and the orixás.

This particular piece features beautifully hand-worked fruit and gourd forms, suspended from a repoussé hanger with twin birds at the top. All charms move freely and create the soft tonal balangandã sound when handled.
